JUST FOR GLUG!
It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not.
Learn to dive for life, not just your holiday!
GLUG is not a diving school per se, so we decided to make a distinction between GLUG events such as Trips and socials from Try Dives and other dive training. Martin is a full time, (gay!) professional Diving Instructor covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance and fully compliant with UK HSE regulations and provides gay friendly diving tuition to GLUG members with various special offers and facilities available. I'm a firm believer that diving for fun is just as important for Instructors to keep up to speed on their skills so you'll find me on most if not all of the GLUG trips, always willing to lend a hand or offer advice and support if you're new to diving in the UK or are trying out some new skills. GLUG has an excellent reputation with the UK and Foreign dive centres & skippers that we use as we nurture our members and encourage training. If you dive with GLUG for the first time, we will always team you up with one of our instructors or experienced UK divers for your first couple of dives.
PADI students are covered by my Professional Diving Insurance Policy whilst engaging in Professional Training Dives, but GLUG recommends all it's members have their own Diving Insurance before embarking on any training or dive trips. Martin usually teaches in small groups, so you don't spend your course sat on a platform waiting for your classmates to complete their skills!
Fun & bubbles are the order of the day!

Try Dive (Discover SCUBA Diving) £35
This is your chance to dip your toe in the water, with SCUBA gear on your back! We teach in a selection of London swimming pools and often include a BBQ & social event with a Try Dive to give you the chance to meet some of the gang.
Open Water Referral (Theory & Pool work) £250
Usually carried out over two consecutive days, but can be spread out over several weekends or evenings. This course is the first part of the Open Water Course in which you learn dive theory, specialist diving skills such as mask clearing, buoyancy techniques and safety drills, all in the comfort of a warm classroom and swimming pool.
There is a chance for home study, with a full colour manual to read and some knowledge review questions to work through as well as a DVD to watch.
Day 1 is split between classroom in the morning and swimming pool in the afternoon, putting into practice some of the theory you've just learned.
Day 2 is again split between the classroom in the morning, where we review & develop the skills you learned the previous day and teach you the basis of dive planning and other skills. We then go back to the pool to practice some new skills and cement the ones learned the previous day.
All kit is provided and there are no hidden costs on this course. The manual is yours to keep and use for reference. On completion of the course your log book will be signed, giving you the option to continue the Open Water course here in the UK with us, or finishing off abroad either with us, or through one of the many international PADI schools as all training is of an international standard.
All you need is a packed lunch, towel, swimming costume and a willingness to learn. We'll do the rest!
Open Water Course (Part 2) £175
This is another two day course, usually completed over a weekend, but again, there are flexible options. Consisting of four dives, you now put into practice the skills you learning in the pool in an Open Water environment, either in the sea, or in a local training facility. Additional costs for this course include site entry fees, usually no more than £10 per day and transport costs to the dive sites. Transport can be arranged and equipment provided, though you will have to hire your own wet suit if you don't already have one. Most UK divers opt to incorporate the Dry Suit Course with the Open Water dives which is more cost effective for the student and allows you to stay snuggly warm on your first dives if you feel the cold. Completion of this course qualifies you to dive to 18m max with another equally or higher qualified diver.
Advanced Open Water £250
Extend your diving range and improve your skills with the AOW course and open up the doors of your diving world a little further. Consisting of five dives, this course can usually be carried out over two days. You must complete a Deep Dive (below 21m to a max of 30m) and an Underwater Navigation Dive to complete the course. The other three dives can be made up of Dive 1 from several speciality training courses of your choice. I would not recommend certain dives for this (Underwater Photography springs to mind) as you can't learn enough from one dive to benefit you in the long run. I would usually recommend Dry Suit for those wanting to dive regularly in the UK, along with Search and Recovery, Wreck, Night Dive, Peak Performance Buoyancy or fish ID are all good ways to extend your diving experience. This course increases your maximum depth to 30m whilst diving with a similarly qualified buddy, allowing you to explore some of the deeper reefs and wrecks both in the UK and abroad.
We also arrange trips to Malta and other overseas destinations, so please ask if you prefer this option!

SCUBA Review £75
If you're a qualified diver but haven't dived for 6 months or more then you need a SCUBA review to keep your insurance valid, whether diving at home or abroad. The course takes place in a swimming pool and it completed over several hours. We brush up your dive theory, practice the skills you learned during your Open Water course and generally increase your buoyancy skills by playing with torpedoes underwater! Why waste holiday time doing a refresher in their pool? Keep your skills current and up to date and stay safe! It's a long way down.....!
Speciality Courses
Dry Suit Speciality £175
This course can be completed in one day with an orientation dive first in a swimming pool. Learn about the different types of Dry Suit on the market and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Understand how a dry suit keeps you warmer and learn how to control your buoyancy, maintain your diving profile and deal with those little incidents you didn't see coming! Fun and exciting, the Dry Suit course is a must have for those who want to dive regularly in the UK. (I usually sneak mine abroad too if I'm honest, the buoyancy is better, they are more flexible in any conditions and well.... I just LOVE my dry suit!)
Please remember to state your height, waist, inside leg or dress size and your shoe size too when booking this course.
Enriched Air Nitrox Speciality £99

Learn the correct procedures for obtaining Nitrox from a dive centre, how to analyse the gas in your cylinders and label them correctly. Learn much more about the theory of Nitrogen absorption and it's effects on the body, how to increase your time underwater and reduce your surface intervals between dives. This is a fun filled, theory based course and be completed in one afternoon or evening. A must have for those interested in multiple dives in a day.
Wreck Diver Speciality £230
Nothing can prepare you for the thrill of seeing your first shipwreck underwater! Being able to explore all the workings of those great ships and submarines, identify areas of the vessel and swim through accommodation blocks, wheel houses and cargo holds safely and maybe even find your own sunken treasure! The UK is littered with fantastic wrecks; the German fleet from WW1, the wrecks of the Salsette and M2 Submarine from WW2 and more modern wrecks like the Aeolian Sky which sank in 1979. And that's before you've gone abroad!
Wrecks provide artificial reefs for life to flourish on. Learn where you're likely to find Lobsters, Tom Pot Blennies, the stunning Electric Blue Conga Eels that hide in the tubes of the M2 and other wrecks and the beautiful little Nudibranchs and other sea life that hide in the cracks and crevices of these majestic man made reefs.
Learn how to avoid the hazards associated with wreck dives. We teach you how to look for and avoid snag hazards, how to line off safely so you can find your way out and how to calculate what is a safe swim through and when to stay put outside! We teach you to fin more efficiently so you're not kicking up silt for you and your buddy and how to calculate how far you can swim into a wreck and much, much more. This is a fun and exciting course which takes place over two days and opens up a whole new world and understanding of what lies beneath!
Deep Diver Speciality £180
Increase your maximum depth range to 40m and reach those tantalising bits of wrecks and reefs that have always eluded you before. Increase your understanding of dive theory and the effects of the increased pressure on your body. Experience the effects of narcosis in a safe environment and understand how increased pressure affects the gasses you can breathe and how to maximise your time at depth by utilising Nitrox mixes and multi-level diving. Learn how to calculate how much gas you need, the level of narcosis you can expect to experience (Equivalent Air Depth) and recognise the symptoms of narcosis in yourself and your buddy and how to deal with them.
Increase your team work skills and open the door to a deeper understanding of diving.
Search & Recovery
Learn the different search techniques available to SCUBA divers, searching as a buddy pair or as a team. Learn how to initiate strategic search patterns, depending on the terrain and item you are looking for. Learn how to use line and reel (without getting tangled in them!) and how to use a Surface Marker Buoy to identify the location of an item and how to use a lift bag o safely bring it to the surface and put that smile back on your buddy's face! We will teach you how to calculate the amount of air you will need in the lift bag to make the item neutrally buoyant and show you safe techniques for brining an item to the surface (or buddy, if they get into trouble!). One handy application of this course is getting your scallops to the surface after a dive on Lullworth Banks! NOT to be missed!
Rescue Diver Speciality £400 (£300 with a current First Aid certificate)
This is the level we'd like all GLUG members to be at if we're honest! The Rescue Course is probably the most rewarding of the PADI Speciality Courses for recreational divers. Challenging, fun and rewarding, in this course we build on the basic rescue skills you learned on your Open Water Course and teach you self rescue skills, recognising and managing stress in yourself and other divers. How to rescue panicked or unresponsive divers from the water and manage and emergency on the surface. We teach you to search for a lost diver underwater and how to bring an unresponsive diver safely to the surface. as well as many other life saving skills. You will be amazed at the amount of confidence you gain on completion of this course. As GLUG members you will also be taught how to administer Emergency Oxygen to a conscious and unconscious diver, how to utilise Nitrox mixes if no Emergency Oxygen is available and much much more. You must have a current First Aid Qualification to complete this course.
EFR (Emergency First Response for Divers) £99
A comprehensive First Aid course, recognised by the HSE for Named First Aid personnel at work. GLUG members also get a Marine Injuries presentation, O2 and Automated External Defibrillator training thrown in for free! Usually these are taught at an extra cost, but I feel happier if my dive buddies have these skills too, wouldn't you?
Learn how to assess the scene of an emergency, keeping yourself and other bystanders free from harm and ensuring that no further harm comes to the casualty. We teach you how to use barrier methods to keep you and your casualty safe from cross infection, how to give effective CPR and manage the scene of an emergency until the Emergency Services arrive. We teach you how to deal with non-emergency situations too, how to asses and deal with minor injuries and illnesses and how to monitor a casualty to see their condition doesn't deteriorate.
This is an awesome 1 day course and very rewarding. You receive your own full colour manual to keep for reference and refreshing your skills and a qualification ID card to identify yourself as a qualified First Aid provider. We never know when First Aid will be needed, but having this course under your belt gives you the confidence to care and offer help in an emergency situation, whether on a dive, at the shops, driving home from work, or in your own home, dealing with a clumsy partner who was chopping an onion whilst dancing to Kylie! Enrol now... you never know when you'll need it!
